Day 21 (August 13, 2013). Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument in Southern Utah is the largest national monument in the US protecting 1.8 million acres (760,996 ha) of land. The area was declared national monument during the first presidency of Bill Clinton in 1996 and it is under the control of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rather than the National Park Service (something unusual for a national monument). The area is so huge that to visit it all you probably need a helicopter. The northwestern part of the monument that we barely touch today corresponds to the canyons around the Escalante River and its tributaries. I was interested in showing Adrián the breathtaking stretch of route UT-12 between the towns of Boulder, UT, and Escalante, UT. Route 12 connects two great national parks, Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon, so if you ever go there you would be killing three birds with one stone. We camped at a very pretty site (# 1) among oaks, cottonwoods, and box elders at the Calf Creek Campground. We made a beer run to the town of Escalante in the afternoon. For dinner we had Mountain House Beef Stew.
